4. If you are installing a ceiling fan in a kitchen or restaurant, the existing power cord you will be using may be thicker, such as a 12 wire. No matter where you are, if your power cord is line 12, you must use # 12-2 or # 12-3 wires instead of # 14-2 or # 14-3 wires. The general rule is not to connect wires of different sizes together.

5. Find the # 14-2 * or # 14-3 * wires from the switch box with # 14 * unswitched 120V front and center lines. If your ceiling fan has a wireless remote control, you may want to power it directly from a 120 volt power outlet. Even better, export and install a new switch box from the power socket, and then power the ceiling fan from this switch box.
